MADONNA -- analogous or compare to the following: Recall "The Holy Virgin Mary" artwork by British artist Chris Ofili, of Nigerian descent, at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999, of the Black Madonna smeared with elephant dung and plastered with white and black female buttocks and vaginas, which then-New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani sought to have taken out of the Museum, temporarily withholding the city's funding of the Brooklyn Museum and of its exhibits, before a court order barred the mayor from doing so. "The Holy Virgin Mary" artwork had been defaced by one art patron who threw paint on it, declaring it "blasphemous". No damage occurred to Ofili's work, which was accompanied with a narration by David Bowie. |
