There was "Avatar", "Titanic", "Star Wars", "Batman" and others but "Black Panther" (from Marvel Studios) may have eclipsed them all as movie event and pure spectacle.  Yet Ryan Coogler's film doesn't get shrunk by the event itself.  Quite the opposite, "Black Panther" towers over the event around it, raising the stakes and beaming a beacon of affirming pride to Black moviegoers all over the African diaspora.

Many people watched "Black Panther" in theaters (IMAX, 3D, 2D, large screen formats) all over the U.S. and Canada tonight, awed by what they saw.  Applause broke out before, during and after Mr. Coogler's film certainly attests to that.

Marvel has a real marvel of a film on its hands.  This is a certified $200 million opener over the four-day holiday weekend, and lots of people, including myself, will see "Black Panther" again.

(Note: There will be a giveaway of Kendrick Lamar's "Black Panther" CD soundtrack here and on Twitter @popcornreel on Friday morning.  Stay tuned.)
