Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" earned an estimated $108 million over the weekend in the U.S. and Canada, according to ERC Box Office (Exhibitor Relations).  The record-breaking February release has grossed $400 million in North America in just nine days of release. 

Final figures will be released on Monday.

"Black Panther" is a full-scale phenomenon.  Strong word-of-mouth and extensive publicity for "Black Panther" has seen repeat viewings of the film among many fans.  The Marvel Studios film has been hailed as the best Marvel film ever by some, including this writer. 

Based on the Marvel Comics series of the 1960s Mr. Coogler's "Black Panther" follows the trials and tribulations of Wakanda, a fictional African nation led by a king struggling with the weight of his title and the country;s expectations of him.  The title character faces external pressures he and the nation he rules have been drawn into.

"Black Panther", which has grossed over $700 million worldwide, is expected to cross the $1 billion-mark globally within the next week to 10 days.  The PG-13-MPAA-rated movie has already broken several box-office records and has a strong chance of surpassing "Avatar" as the world's biggest-grossing film of all time.

Mr. Coogler's drama boasts a superb cast including Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Forest Whitaker, Franklin Duke, Florence Kasumba, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman.
