As the long, anti-climactic film awards season grinds to the end of its
seemingly inexorable journey on Sunday night it is already time to look ahead a
year from now to what appears inevitable:
"Black Panther" as a major contender at the
Oscars.
Ryan Coogler's visceral and beautiful film has already obliterated the
competition and is scaling the lofty heights of towering box-office records with
ease.
Will "Black Panther" have the awards accolades to go with the box-office moolah?
No reason to think not.
A Best Picture nomination for "Black Panther" seems a sure thing. Likewise
for the film's visual effects. Ludwig Goransson's original score as well.
Danai Gurira and Winston Duke could get supporting acting nods. Mr.
Coogler looks a shoo-in to receive Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay
Oscar nominations. Rachel Morrison could have her second cinematography
Oscar nomination in a row. Add Hannah Beachler's production design and
Ruth Carter's costume design and a strong case, at least now, can be made for
strong representation.
The only question is, will "Black Panther" have the staying power that
Oscar-nominated films like
"Get Out" have?
The answer -- so far -- is clear.
