R.J. Cutler's documentary "The September Issue",
about the exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the preparation of the September
2007 issue of Vogue Magazine, had the fifth highest all-time per screen
average for an opening documentary. Its debut last Friday in New York City
on August 28 on just six screens was received enthusiastically with a remarkable
$40,013 per-screen average, according to estimates by the A&E IndieFilms and
Roadside Attractions, which released the film. The total estimated gross
for the weekend for Mr. Cutler's documentary, which features Vogue's notorious
editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, was $240,078, the highest-grossing opening weekend
ever for an A&E IndieFilms and/or Roadside Attractions film.
"The September Issue" has the highest per screen opening weekend average of
every film but one so far in 2009. The film expands its release to markets
across the U.S. over the next two weeks. Howard Cohen, Co-President of
Roadside, was naturally thrilled by audiences' robust response to the film.
"People are fascinated by Anna Wintour and wanted to see this revealing and
funny film, the first real portrait of a legend who's reigned at Vogue for 20
years."
Mr. Cutler's film premiered at Sundance in January of this year in the
Documentary Competition, winning Best Cinematography. "The September
Issue" opens in Los Angeles and San Francisco and other U.S. cities on September
11.
