By all accounts the panda took center stage
last night on day two of the 61st Cannes Film Festival, where spectators and
press photographers took endless pictures of Angelina Jolie (who lent her voice
to the animated film "Kung Fu Panda") and Brad Pitt (whose next film "The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button", directed by David Fincher, will open in
December in the U.S.) Ms. Jolie, who announced that she is pregnant with
twins, was joined with fellow "Panda" cast members Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Liu and
Jack Black. Mr. Black, who appeared in "Be Kind Rewind" in February and
has a prominent role in "Tropic Thunder" this August is the main focus of "Kung
Fu Panda", which opens on June 6 in the U.S. and Canada.
There were no major film buys at the Festival yesterday, but chances are there
will be some big purchases of films before too long. Michael Moore is
expected to get a positive reception at Cannes today, where he is beloved after
"Fahrenheit 9/11" and "SiCKO". He will be in Cannes to promote the sequel
to "Fahrenheit" and shop it around.
Yesterday The Popcorn Reel reported that the "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of
The Crystal Skull" screening would take place at Cannes in a matter of hours --
but that was erroneous. Steven Spielberg's epic adventure will have its
world premiere at Cannes on Sunday.
