The ninth Tribeca Film Festival will feature the world premiere of Ice Cube's documentary film "Straight Outta L.A." on Friday, April 23, it was announced today.

The documentary will examine the relationship between the former NFL team the Los Angeles Raiders and its host city.  Ice Cube directs himself as he talks about the impact of the Raiders, who originated in Oakland.  The Raiders were in Los Angeles as an NFL franchise for 13 years beginning in 1982.

Ice Cube formerly fronted the gangster rap group N.W.A. before embarking on a solo music career and then evolving into an actor and director.  The documentary will also focus on Ice Cube's group and its alliance with the Raiders, and how Cube's music forged ties with young blacks and Latinos, effectuating a strong identity with both N.W.A. and the Raiders in Los Angeles.

"Straight Outta L.A" is an ESPN Films production and part of the sports network's "30 for 30" series.

Nancy Schaefer, the executive director of the Tribeca Film Festival, said today in part: "'Straight Outta L.A.' gives us an entertaining, first hand account of how a professional sports team captivated a city and ultimately changed the culture of L.A."

"Straight Outta L.A." will also be shown at Tribeca on Saturday, May 1 along with several other ESPN sports films.  Ice Cube's film will also be televised for the first time on ESPN cable television on Tuesday, May 11 at 8pm Eastern time.

The ninth annual Tribeca Film Festival will run from April 21 through May 2.  It was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 to economically revitalize Lower Manhattan in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001, which occurred very close to New York City's Tribeca district.
