I hadn't seen The New York Times' choices for nominees for this year's Academy Awards when I decided to weigh in on who the Oscar nominees should be when they are announced on January 24.  The Academy likely won't even sniff at some of these picks but I believe the choices merit serious consideration.  It's a new year.  I'd love to see the Academy become adventurous and look in new directions.  If the Academy's annual Oscars telecast wants a wider audience  -- which they'll get by default with Billy Crystal as host -- then why not live dangerously with something off the mainstream's beaten path?

Without any further you-know-what, here are my would-be Academy nominees in 12 categories: best picture, director, actress, actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, cinematography, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, production design, original score and foreign language film.
