The Directors Guild Of America announced its nominees for its 64th Annual DGA Awards today, and Woody Allen and David Fincher found themselves on the shortlist of finalists.  Mr. Fincher's inclusion for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" may have been a surprise to some, as much as the omission of Terrence Malick for "The Tree Of Life", a film which has seen Mr. Malick win kudos for directing from a number of film critics' groups across the U.S. over the last few weeks, including the National Society Of Film Critics just last week.

Mr. Allen's inclusion for "Midnight In Paris" was hailed this morning, and the film itself is likely to be nominated for best picture, director and original screenplay Oscars on January 24 by the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences.  "Midnight In Paris" will likely take on the shape of a serious Oscars contender with the DGA nomination for its director.

Aside from Mr. Allen and Mr. Fincher, Michel Hazanavicius ("The Artist"), Alexander Payne ("The Descendants") and Martin Scorsese ("Hugo") all made it to the nominees' circle.  Each of the films that these last three nominees directed are widely expected to be nominated for best picture and director Oscars this month.

The winner of the DGA award is a strong indicator of the winner of the Best Director Oscar.  Only six times in the history of the DGA Awards has its winner failed to win the Oscar in the same category.  The most recent example was Rob Marshall (for "Chicago"), who was bested by Roman Polanski for "The Pianist" at the Oscars in 2003.

The 64th Directors Guild Awards will take place in Los Angeles at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland on January 28.
