Roger Ebert has forgotten more
about film than many of us remember. Right?
Wrong.
His encyclopedic knowledge of film and cinema remains firmly intact.
On a personal note, he's been a
very kind and generous soul to yours truly.
More importantly, he continues to write and be so kind and generous to thousands
of other film critics, filmmakers and movie lovers the world over.
Not content to hunker down in an ivory tower and retire amidst a new generation
of film pundits, critics, reviewers, bloggers, etc., Roger is more passionate,
forthright and courageous than ever.
He stares at mortality and keeps moving forward, gathering strength.
Maintaining momentum.
Today on his Twitter
page the esteemed film
critic tweeted that "I'm physically feeling tip-top these days. It's true
I'm dying--but no faster than anyone else."
In an amazingly moving and candid
portrait
by Esquire's Chris Jones, America's First Critic conveys his views on numerous
subjects.
The esteemed Chicago-based critic, who penned the screenplay for the 1970 film
"Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls", holds his annual film festival
EbertFest each year in Champaign,
Illinois.
The 12th Annual EbertFest, to take place at the Virginia Theater in Champaign,
will run from Wednesday, April 21 through Sunday, April 25, 2010.
