Tonight at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards "Avatar"
took home the top two prizes, best picture (drama) and best director James
Cameron. The event was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and for the time
being, "Avatar" became the front-runner for best picture at the
83rd Annual Academy Awards, which will be
held on March 7.
It was a mixed bag of winners on the film side at the Globes, with prizes being
spread evenly. No fewer than eight different films won major Globe awards.
Jeff Bridges took top actor honors in a drama for his acting in
"Crazy Heart", while Sandra Bullock won for her
lead dramatic role in "The Blind Side".
Mo'Nique was, winner of best supporting actress ("Precious")
for her role as an abusive mother in Lee Daniels'
film. Robert Downey Jr. won best actor in a comedy or musical for
"Sherlock Holmes". Meryl Streep took home
best actress in a comedy or musical for "Julie &
Julia", while Christoph Waltz won best supporting
actor in "Inglourious Basterds".
The wins for Ms. Bullock and Ms. Streep set up an interesting week in the lead
up to the Screen Actors Guild Awards this Saturday: which of them would likely
win best performance by a female actor? Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe
and Helen Mirren are also contenders at Saturday's awards, voted on solely by
actors.
Meanwhile, Ricky Gervais hosted the Globes, adding a lively and occasionally
provocative brand of humor, including introducing Mel Gibson as a man "who likes
to drink" even more than Mr. Gervais, who had a beer during his hosting duties.
Amidst the occasionally somber atmosphere formed by last week's earthquake in
Haiti, Hollywood tonight was in generally good spirits. Robert De Niro and
Leonardo DiCaprio cracked jokes about Martin Scorsese and his hidden sex tapes.
"He sleeps with film", Mr. De Niro said, in an uncharacteristic moment of levity
by his standards. Mr. Scorsese was presented with the Cecil B. De Mille
Award for lifetime achievement in film, as well as for his work preserving film.
Other winners on the film side at the Globes: "Up"
scored wins for best animated feature and best original score.
"The Hangover" won best motion picture
(comedy or drama). "Crazy
Heart" also won best original song in addition to Mr. Bridges win;
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner won best screenplay
for "Up In The Air", while
"The White Ribbon" won best foreign language
film (Austria). The film was directed by Michael Haneke, who accepted the
award.
Often it took award recipients about a minute or more to reach the stage to
accept their awards, as they had to take circuitous routes and inconveniently
squeeze through a maze of tightly compacted tables and chairs to get up on stage
to speak. In some cases the speeches that went even a moment over time
were later played down by music.
