H
appy New Year!

Time to wipe the (film) slate clean.

The year 2006 was an exciting film year and hopefully your year was good as well.

There's a lot to look forward to in 2007, a year that is less than 24 hours old.  An abundance of films will be coming your way, including eagerly-awaited movies like "Shrek The Third", "Spider-Man 3", "Live Free Or Die Hard", "Oceans 13", "The Lives Of Others", "American Gangster", "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford", the latest "Harry Potter", "Black Book", "Transformers", "The Simpsons Movie", "The Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer", "Ghost Rider" and countless others.

The Sundance Film Festival kicks off 2007 in its annual incarnation in Utah's Park City as well as in Ogden.  There are a litany of exciting films that will be on exhibition there, with buyers shopping for some of the most promising films.  And with the Berlin, Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and South By Southwest film festivals and many more to come, the big screen in that theater near you will be crackling with celluloid excitement.

And of course this month of January sees the onset of the next eight week of Awards Season mania, with the Golden Globe Awards on January 15 and the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 28.  And with the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, Directors' Guild, BAFTA, Independent Spirit and Academy Awards ceremonies to come in February (and the NAACP Image Awards in March), these next few weeks will be a cavalcade or avalanche of celebration of film from the past calendar year.

As has been said on these pages in the past, movies lift our spirits, challenge us to think, inspire us to change, transform our emotions and spark our consciences.  They are magical and no matter what language they are in, fill our hearts with hope, sorrow and wonderment.  The 2007 film year is guaranteed to be filled with magical moments.

So stay tuned, keep logging on to The Popcorn Reel for all the latest film news, events, coverage, reviews, interviews, feature stories and lots more.

And most importantly -- have a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year.  Make 2007 a special year for you and yours.

Sincerely,
