The San Francisco Film Critics Circle Loves The "Hurt"

A scene from Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker", voted best picture of 2009 by
the San Francisco Film Critics Circle last night. Ms. Bigelow was named
Best Director. The film will be on DVD on January 12 in the U.S. and
Canada.

Last night The San
Francisco Film Critics Circle awarded "The Hurt Locker" its Best
Picture of 2009. Kathryn Bigelow's drama about a team of U.S. military
explosives detonators in Iraq stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian
Geraghty.
The SFFCC also named Ms. Bigelow best director.
In the Best Actor category, Colin Firth won for his performance as a man
flickering between life and death in
"A Single Man", while Meryl Streep was named Best Actress for playing Julia
Child in "Julie & Julia".
Christian McKay won best supporting actor for his work as the larger-than-life
auteur Orson Welles in "Me And Orson
Welles", and Mo'Nique won best supporting actress for her work in
"Precious", playing an abusive mother.
The SFFCC named "Coraline" best
animated feature of 2009 and "You, The Living" as best foreign language film of
the year.
In the original screenplay category, Quentin Tarantino's
"Inglourious Basterds" was named,
and Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach's
"The Fantastic Mr. Fox" won best adapted screenplay, which was based on
Roald Dahl's book.
In the best cinematography category, Roger Deakins' work in "A Serious Man" was
recognized.
A special citation was awarded to the film "Sita Sings The Blues", while Frazer
Bradshaw ("Everything Strange And New") and Barry Jenkins ("Medicine
For Melancholy") were both named as winners of the Marlon Riggs Award.
The SFFCC announced its In Memoriam award for the late Rose Kaufman, co-writer
of the films "Henry & June" and "The Wanderers", and wife of Bay Area filmmaker
Philip Kaufman ("The Unbearable Lightness Of Being").
The San Francisco Film Critics Circle was founded in 2002 and includes 26 film
critics from Bay Area publications, including The Popcorn Reel.
