DVD REVIEW - "Moscow, Belgium" (Aanrijding In Moscou)

Barbara Sarafian as Matty and Jurgen Delnaet as Jonny in "Moscow, Belgium", on DVD today in the U.S.
NeoClassics Films

Christophe Van Rompaey's "Moscow, Belgium" (Aanrijding In Moscou) hits DVD shelves today in the U.S., and this impressive comedy-drama from Belgium is as much a triumph on DVD as it was in select American theaters last year.  A middle-aged woman (Barbara Sarafian) has given up on love but is forced to consider an unruly 29-year-old man (Jurgen Delnaet) after an car accident brings them together.

Ms. Sarafian gives a wonderful performance as Matty, a cynical, lovelorn divorced mother of three.  Tart, sexy and resolute in the role, the actress is unvarnished and vulnerable as her character tries to find peace within her heart.  Mr. Delnaet brings charm and fire to his work as Jonny, a truck driver who has numerous ambitions.

To complicate matters, Matty's kids are going in divergent directions and her unreliable ex-husband (Johan Heldenbergh) seems a tangential presence in their lives.

The DVD includes the original U.S. theatrical release of the film, complete with English and Spanish language subtitles.  The film is presented in widescreen anamorphic format (1:85:1), in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.  The audio is in the Dutch language.  On DVD the picture is contains some grain, retaining the washed-out colors of Ruben Impens' cinematography, which also has an earthy, brownish tone in some scenes.

Several extras are included on the "Moscow, Belgium" DVD.  There's an insightful and sometimes funny audio commentary by Mr. Van Rompaey and the film's producer Jean-Claude Van Rijckeghem.  Two trailers of the film - the Belgium and U.S. versions - are included, as is a picture gallery of scenes from the film and a featurette on the film's debut at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

"Moscow, Belgium" is well worth your while to rent or buy.  It's an enjoyable, entertaining film, running one hour and 46 minutes.  The film is unrated, and contains language, nudity and sexual content.  It is available beginning today on DVD in the U.S.
