MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

This impressive sophomore feature directing effort from Ava DuVernay dovetails as a companion to "The Deep Blue Sea" as a contemporary take on the age-old issues of romance, relationships and abandonment.  Emayatzy Corinealdi is excellent as Ruby, whose husband is incarcerated for eight years.  A bus driver (David Oyelowo) builds an affection for her, but it isn't so simple.  Ms. DuVernay's direction of this evocative, poetic and gorgeous drama is magnificent.  "Middle Of Nowhere" is an intimate, mature story about a family that faces challenges and tries to keep it together.  Ms. Corinealdi strikes a fine balance in a nuanced performance that is pitched perfectly.  Lorraine Toussaint brings sincerity and grounding in an excellent turn as Ruby's mother.  Bradford Young's cinematography is wondrous.  Released in the U.S. in October 2012.  One hour and 44 minutes.  Distributor: AFFRM.  Original review
