Surrounded by controversy just hours earlier when the ABC television network
appeared to jump the gun with apparent leaked nominations on their own Internet
site, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences this morning announced its
Oscar nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Beverly Hills.
Anne Hathaway joined Academy President Tom Sherak in announcing the finalists,
and as expected "Avatar",
"Inglourious Basterds", "The Hurt Locker" and "Up In
The Air" fared well. Each film garnered best picture and director
nods. "Avatar" and "The Hurt Locker" each led the way with nine
nominations. "Up" became the first film to be
nominated in both the best animated film and best picture categories.
There were no surprises in the lead acting categories: Sandra Bullock, Helen
Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe and Meryl Streep made the final cut, as
did Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman and Jeremy Renner.
Supporting work recognized included performances by Mo'Nique, Anna Kendrick,
Christoph Waltz and Woody Harrelson. Maggie
Gyllenhaal was a surprise in the supporting category, for her role as a
journalist in "Crazy Heart".
Omitted from the category were Samantha Morton ("The
Messenger") and Marion Cotillard ("Nine").
Kathryn Bigelow's nomination for best director ("The Hurt Locker") keeps her on
course to become the first woman to be awarded the Oscar for direction.
Joining her in the category were Lee Daniels
("Precious"), Ms. Bigelow's former husband James Cameron ("Avatar"),
Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds") and
Jason Reitman ("Up In The Air").
The best adapted screenplay contest promises to be very close as "In The Loop",
"Up In The Air", "District 9", "Precious" and "An
Education" formed the final five. In the original screenplay category
the nominees were "Inglourious Basterds", "The Hurt Locker", "The Messenger", "A
Serious Man" and "Up".
The best animated feature nominations saw "Coraline",
"Up", "The Princess And The Frog" and
"The Fantastic Mr. Fox" vying with the relatively
unknown "The Secret Of Kells" for the award, while the best foreign language
feature saw the acclaimed films "A Prophet" and
"The White Ribbon" leading the field of five. "The Cove" and "Food,
Inc." were among the best documentary feature nominations.
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin
LIVE from The Kodak Theater on Sunday, March 7 and will be televised live in the
U.S. by the ABC television network, beginning at 8:30p.m. Eastern time/5:30p.m.
Pacific Time.
