"Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1" is a wham-bam majestic fantasy that will entertain fans and non-fans alike.  Thanks to its director David Yates and the performers, "Part 1" is the best Potter in the film series, and you'll have to wait six months until its conclusion.

The three intrepid students of Hogwarts are on a mission to destroy three Horcruxes, which if they ever land in the hands of Valdemort, the evil reaper of death, would obviously prove fatal.  The Deathly Hallows are explained in Mr. Yates's two-and-a-half hour drama, which is a showcase for lots of levity and the director's trademark dark shades, perfect for the penultimate film of J.K. Rowling's epic set of books.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) are into their twenties now, but their urgency in solving mysteries and embark on adventures to unknown and dangerous realms hasn't been quenched.  Each works separately and together in their quest to destroy the powerful, dangerous Horcruxes before Valdemort gets to Harry.

I've never cracked open a single one of Ms. Rowling's mega-successful books about these beloved students at Hogwarts, but Mr. Yates has made me a fan with his direction of the last few films, especially this one.  He takes us to the world Ms. Rowling architected and immerses us in it.  The visions, including the production design, are stunning.  For the entire film I was drawn into this macabre, mysterious world.  None of the visual effects are distracting.  Each scene is rich with detail and each piece of information pushes the story along.  You needn't be a member of a secret Potter fraternity to understand what transpires in "Hallows Part 1".

Most of all, the principal characters know how to have fun even in challenging moments.  Mr. Yates paces the film deliberately enough to allow the characters and audience to breathe.  We aren't bombarded.  We contemplate.  We are entertained.  There are many characters in this epic film.  None overstay their welcome.

Even with its many ominous visions, Mr. Yates makes this film brighter than his previous efforts, and the contrast is welcoming.  He directs sweeping action sequences and juxtaposes them with tranquil, wordless moments.  "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1" is a grand revelation.

Part 2 can't come soon enough.

With: Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, Helena Bonham Carter, Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, David Thewlis, Timothy Spall, Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Simon McBurney, Richard Griffiths, Brendan Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Robbie Coltrane, Clémence Poésy, Peter Mullan, Natalia Tena, Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright.

"Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1" is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association Of America for some sequences of intense action violence, frightening images and brief sensuality.  The film's running time is two hours and 26 minutes.
