This morning the nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild awards were
announced, and on the film side "Inglourious
Basterds", "Precious" and
"Up In The Air" all led with three
nominations.
The SAG Awards, which
will take place on Saturday, January 23 in Los Angeles, are widely considered to
be a precursor for the Academy
Awards. In many years the winners of the Awards - voted on solely by
actors - have gone on to win the Oscar.
This fact arguably consolidates the momentum for "Up In The Air", which led with
six Golden Globe nominations on Tuesday. Jason
Reitman's film won SAG nominations
for best actor (George Clooney) and best supporting actress (Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick.)
"Precious", which had some momentum early on and lost a little, gained it back
after Tuesday's Globe nominations and further capitalized on it today with SAG
noms for Gabby Sidibe (lead actress), Mo'Nique (supporting actress) and ensemble
cast. "Inglourious Basterds" received SAG nods for
Christoph Waltz's supporting turn as an SS colonel in
Quentin Tarantino's satirical film,
and Diane Kruger in a surprise, snagged a nomination for supporting actress.
The ensemble cast also gained a nod.
The most competitive races emerged in the male actor categories, as Jeremy
Renner, hailed for his role in "The Hurt Locker" joined Jeff Bridges ("Crazy
Heart"), Mr. Clooney, Colin Firth ("A
Single Man") and Morgan Freeman ("Invictus")
as nominees. It was Mr. Renner's first major film acting award nomination
and throws an interesting monkey wrench into what will surely be a
closely-watched competition next month and come Oscar time in March.
Notably absent from the category however was Ben Foster, for his work in
"The Messenger".
In the supporting male category Mr. Foster's co-star Woody Harrelson made it to
the final five as did Christopher Plummer ("The Last Station"), Matt Damon ("Invictus"),
Mr. Waltz, and Stanley Tucci ("The Lovely Bones").
On the leading ladies' side Sandra Bullock ("The
Blind Side") joined Meryl Streep ("Julie &
Julia"), Miss Sidibe, Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Helen Mirren ("The
Last Station"). Supporting ladies nods went to Ms. Kruger, Ms. Kendrick,
Ms. Farmiga, Penelope Cruz ("Nine") and Mo'Nique, who may be the one sure thing
for her role in "Precious".
In the ensemble cast category "Precious" and "Inglourious Basterds" were joined
by the films "An Education", "The Hurt Locker" and "Nine".
