"Shame", Steve McQueen's psychodrama about a New York man addicted to sex and intimidated by intimacy, picked up seven British Independent Film Award nominations this week as the 2012 Awards Season got underway in earnest.

The film, shot in New York City earlier this year, has been gaining buzz and acclaim even prior to its release next month in the U.S.

"Shame" stars Michael Fassbender, who won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in September, and Carey Mulligan.  The actors play brother and sister in the film, which last week was rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association Of America for its sexual content.

Fox Searchlight Pictures, which is distributing "Shame" in the U.S., has decided to make its prohibitive NC-17 rating a plus as it pushes the film for a potential run at the Oscar.

The British Independent Film Award nominations for "Shame" included nominations for Mr. Fassbender and Ms. Mulligan, and nominations for best British Independent Film, screenplay, director, cinematography and editing.

The Awards will be presented on December 4 in London, two days after "Shame" debuts in the U.S.

"Shame" opens in the U.K. on January 23, 2012.
