AMOUR

One of the most thoughtful, sincere and realistic discussions of death I've ever seen on the big screen, Michael Haneke's "Amour" is a drama stripped of sentimentality and filled with honesty.  How does love prepare us for the inevitable?  How does the question about when the end comes fill our hearts and our thoughts, especially when it comes to those we love the most?  "Amour" breathes in real time, presenting moments of contemplation and its greatness lies in the quiet and unspoken.  Glimpses of faces in the dark.  Such solitary moments are pure and brilliant.  Mr. Haneke, who continues to provoke here, does so to make us think and will us to a decision or conclusion.  Emmanuelle Riva is excellent as a woman who has been married for decades to a man (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who loves her so dearly.  This is a vital, mature film.  Released in the U.S. in December 2012.  Two hours and seven minutes.  Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics.  Review soon.
