In a relaxed atmosphere on the Santa Monica Pier and beach, "Get Out" soared winning Best Feature at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, putting it on course for what some would call a surprise Best Picture win at the Oscars tomorrow.

In recent times the Spirit Awards best feature winner had foreshadowed the Best Picture Oscar winner 24 hours later.

"Get Out" is seen as a long shot -- but today it was anything but, as the film's director Jordan Peele also won best director.

Other winners today included Greta Gerwig, (Best Screenplay, "Lady Bird"), "Mudbound" (Robert Altman Award), "A Fantastic Woman" (Best International Film), Frances McDormand (female lead, "Three Billboards"), Allison Janney (supporting female, "I, Tonya"),  Agnes Varda and JR (documentary, "Faces, Places"), Timothee Chalamet (Best Actor, "Call Me By Your Name") and Sam Rockwell (supporting male, "Three Billboards").

Reminder: The Oscars are this Sunday, March 4 and will be broadcast live in the U.S. on ABC at 5pm Pacific/8pm Eastern.
