The Sundance Institute announced late tonight that the Spotlight Surprise film
to be shown at this year's Sundance Film Festival is the debut feature film
directed by the world-renowned graffiti artist
Banksy. The film is titled "Exit Through The Gift Shop".
Bansky's film will have its World Premiere at the
Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 24 at 8:30pm at the Library Center
Theater in Park City, Utah.
"Gift Shop" is about a French amateur filmmaker and shopkeeper's efforts to
befriend the artist, which take a turn when Banksy holds up a lens to his
pursuing subject. The film will feature footage of such artists as Shepard
Fairey at work, and is narrated by the actor Rhys Ifans.
In a statement released late tonight John Cooper, the director of the Sundance
Film Festival, said in part of "Exit Through The Gift Shop": "The story is so
bizarre I began to question if it could be even real . . . but in the end I
didn't care. I feel bad I won't be able to shake the filmmaker's hand and
tell him how much I love this film."
Bansky said, "It's the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable.
And failed."
"Exit Through The Gift Shop" will show five other times during the Sundance Film
Festival, which begins tomorrow and runs through January 31.
