"The Dark Knight" Lurks

Yesterday, Warner Brothers released additional publicity photographs of "The Dark Knight", Christopher Nolan's sequel to "Batman Begins", the hit film of 2005.  Mr. Nolan, who has gone from strength to strength in a relatively short time as a director ("Memento" and "Insomnia") is no doubt hoping that the world receives his "Batman" follow up in the same fashion as it did three summers ago.

The sad passing of Heath Ledger will have its effect but most likely as a celebration of his acting skills and bravado in the coveted role of The Joker, who returns to menace the citizenry of Gotham City, making New York a Big Apple rotten to its core.  Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman return, as does Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman.  Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal make their "Batman" debuts.  (Some of the new pictures from the film appear here.)

"The Dark Knight" opens in theaters across the U.S. and Canada as well as other countries, beginning on July 18.

Note:

On April 22, 2008, Nicole Kidman, the UNIFEM goodwill ambassador, appeared at the United Nations to speak out against violence against women at a press conference held at the UN Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan in New York City.  Ms. Kidman, now several months pregnant, encouraged and urged people to sign an online petition condemning violence against women.  The online petition is available at www.saynotoviolence.org.

In the immortal words of The Popcorn Reel, good night -- and a good weekend to you too.
