Today the auteur Orson Welles, who starred in many classic films, turns 100
years old. One of the greatest films of all time, "The Third Man", will
get a special 4k restoration and world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival
later this month. Mr. Welles was one of the film's key figures.
Carol Reed's legendary 1949 noir based on Graham Greene's script will open in
its newly-restored format on June 26 at the
Film Forum in New York City for two weeks.
"The Third Man" opens in its 4k format on July 3 at the
NuArt Theatre in Los Angeles. The 4k
format will also be unveiled this summer in San Francisco, Seattle,
Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and additional U.S. cities.
"The Third Man" is noted for its excellent cinematography by Robert Krasker (he
won an Academy Award for his photography) as well as its famous zither music by
Anton Karas. The music is one of the film's most distinctive aspects, so
integral to its mood and feel. Mr. Reed's film also won the Palme D'Or at
Cannes.
Boasting one of the finest casts in a film "The Third Man" featured Joseph
Cotten, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard and, of course, Mr. Welles as Harry Lime.
The special 4k restoration of "The Third Man" was done by Deluxe Restoration via
StudioCanal. Rialto Pictures is the official distributor that will release
the restored film.
