Following a Tuesday morning of rare and extraordinary circumstances with
stunning omissions and surprise inclusions in its Oscar nominations, the Academy
Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences announced another such rarity today:
granting best picture nominee
"The Tree Of Life" an additional producer for
Oscar purposes.
The Academy had changed its rules a few years ago to reduce the number of
producer credits to a maximum of three for the Best Picture category following
contretemps surrounding "The Aviator" in 2005 with Graham King claiming a
producer credit and being at odds with one of the film's other producers Michael
Mann.
An executive committee meeting this week determined that Terrence Malick's
critically-acclaimed and audience-dividing film was a "rare and extraordinary
circumstance" under Academy rules, and saw fit to name four producers eligible
for an Oscar each if the film won best picture. The four producers were
deemed by the Academy's executive committee to be persons who "genuinely
produced" Mr. Malick's film.
The Fox Searchlight Pictures film release credits list five producers: Sarah
Green, Bill Pohlad, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner (Mr. Pitt's producing partner) and
Grant Hill.
In its final ruling today the Academy struck Mr. Pitt (who stars in the film)
from the film's producer credit for Oscar eligibility. Mr. Pitt was
already nominated this week as a producer of
"Moneyball"
in the best picture category and as best actor in the same film.
"The Tree Of Life" was nominated for three Oscars on Tuesday: best picture, best
director and best cinematography -- two more Oscar nominations than some awards
insiders had expected. Despite strong competition, "The Tree Of Life" is
widely expected to win best cinematography (by Emmanuel Lubezki) next month.
The 84th Annual Academy Awards take place on Sunday, February 26 at 8:30pm
Eastern/5:30pm Pacific U.S. time at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood And Highland
in Los Angeles.
