Boxes of chocolate, flowers and most importantly audiences accompanied Garry
Marshall's "Valentine's Day", serenading it to
the box office summit in its debut, with $63.1 million over the four-day
President's Day holiday weekend, according to final numbers released by
Exhibitor Relations. The film
had the largest President's Day weekend opening ever.
The multi-star ensemble romantic comedy has received generally negative reviews,
including from The Popcorn Reel. Mr. Marshall's film combines such stars
as Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner and Ashton Kutcher with such veterans as
Shirley MacLaine and Hector Elizondo.
Two other new films debuted strongly over the holiday-weekend: "Percy Jackson
And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" opened in second place with $38.6
million. In third place, "The Wolfman",
starring Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro, opened with $35.5 million. Joe
Johnston's film is based on the screenplay of the 1941 film "The Wolf Man",
which starred Lon Chaney, Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi.
Rounding out the top five films were "Avatar", which
continues to break and set records ($28.7 million; total domestic gross: $666.3
million), and the previous weekend's number one film "Dear John", which hauled
in $16 million and to date has grossed $54 million.
Despite its robust showing, "Valentine's Day" may be knocked off its perch this
weekend by Martin Scorsese's delayed-release "Shutter Island", which stars
Leonardo DiCaprio.
