On February 11 at the Scientific And
Technical Awards, filmmaker, visionary and special effects maestro Douglas
Trumbull will be presented with the Gordon E. Sawyer Award by the Scientifc and
Technical branch of the Academy, for his technical contributions to the motion
picture industry.
Mr. Trumbull has created many visual effects, including the effects for such
films as Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", Ridley Scott's "Blade
Runner" and Terrence Malick's
"The Tree Of Life". The latter film is
still in contention as a possible nominee for visual effects Oscar, and the
nominees will be announced on January 24.
Mr. Trumbull has revolutionized much of the filmmaking effects process,
including being an innovator in several areas, such as motion control
photography, slit-scan photography and inter-positive matte painting, among many
others.
